Signs Your Cooling System Is Going Bad

The cooling system in your car, truck, or utility vehicle can go bad if you fail to service it. Ideally, the system should be serviced every 30,000 miles. This not only gives us a chance to replace the old coolant with new coolant but also to check the system for leaks and clogs. If you have any of the following problems, there is a part or parts in your cooling system that are going bad and need to be replaced. Do not worry. We are cooling system experts here at our auto repair shop.

Leaking Engine Coolant

The cooling system can start to leak once the parts get too old. Specifically, the radiator hoses can dry up and crack. In addition, the thermostat and water pump can start to leak when they are too old. If the radiator is old, it may have corrosion at the bottom that is eating through the metal. Eventually, you will end up with a hole in the bottom of your radiator. Finally, old seals and gaskets must also be replaced in order to prevent engine coolant from leaking out of them.

A Clogged Cooling System

A clogged cooling system is also a bad cooling system. Failing to service the cooling system can result in dirt and sediment building up inside the radiator, the hoses, and other parts of the cooling system. If the system gets clogged, the coolant cannot make its way through the entire engine; the clog will block its progress. Consequently, your engine may start to overheat frequently because it does not have coolant circulating to certain parts. As such, those parts will overheat.

Faulty System Parts

Another thing that will prevent coolant from circulating throughout the engine is a faulty water pump. This part lasts approximately 10 years. In terms of mileage, people normally drive about 100,000 miles in 10 years. If the water pump has gone bad, you may not have coolant circulating through the engine. The same is true if the thermostat goes bad because the thermostat releases the coolant into the engine. Faulty cooling system parts also equal a bad cooling system.

Radiator Malfunction

Finally, the radiator can malfunction if it gets clogged with dirt and sediment or if it starts to leak. In addition, the inlets built into the radiator that allow air in can get clogged by dirt and debris.
