Problems Caused by a Clogged Air Filter

A clogged air filter can cause more problems than you realize. This is why it is recommended that you have the air filter changed once a year in your car, truck, or utility vehicle. If you drive more than 12,000 miles in 12 months, have the air filter changed every 12,000 miles. Here are the problems that are caused by a clogged air filter in the engine of your automobile.

Sluggish Acceleration

If the air cannot get past the filter and into the combustion chamber, you will have problems with your vehicle’s acceleration. The acceleration may lag, or the acceleration may surge if the engine is burning too much fuel. You will have problems with the acceleration every time you press down on the accelerator.

Sluggish Performance

You will also have the same problems with your engine’s performance. The performance may lag and sputter or surge. This is an indication that there is not the correct balance of air and fuel in the combustion chamber. In fact, if there is too much fuel, it can cover the spark plugs in soot.

Black Exhaust Smoke

In addition to affecting the spark plugs, the unburned fuel can also make its way through the exhaust system and create black exhaust. In severe cases, you may see flames coming out of the tailpipe. You do not want to drive your automobile when the engine is running in this condition.

Poor Fuel Economy

All of these things will reduce your fuel efficiency. The engine needs to operate efficiently in order for you to get the best gas mileage you can out of your automobile. If the air and fuel are imbalanced because of a clogged air filter, your engine will consume more fuel because it is running inefficiently.

Popping Engine Noises

We mentioned above that the lack of air and too much fuel in the combustion chamber can create problems with soot on the spark plugs. When this happens, your engine may pop or cough while you are driving the automobile. This is a sign that there is a problem with the spark plugs.

CEL Dashboard Warning

Finally, all of the above can trigger the engine control unit to turn on the check engine light. Your engine needs attention, and, in this case, it needs a new air filter.
